The following is a reprint of the interview I had with Jennifer Kohl of Lotus Yoga in Montclair, N.J. – July 2011

J.K.- Why did you decide to become a chiropractor?

I decided to become a chiropractor for several reasons…first and foremost is because it has helped me so much. When I was 16 years old, I sustained a serious injury to my lumbar spine from powerlifting; it was horrible, literally I could not walk without falling to the ground. My family doctor prescribed Tylenol and recommended bed rest; after several days of excruciating pain and no improvement I sought the care of a chiropractor, and was up and walking that same day with much less pain. The second important factor that appealed to me about chiropractic is the holistic approach to health. Chiropractic aims to get to the root of the problem with out the use of pharmaceuticals, which mask the cause of the problem, are potentially dangerous, and in many cases result in side effects.

J.K.- You had a longstanding practice in Brooklyn, what made you decide to open an office in Montclair?

I had three practices in Brooklyn and closed one office and have restructured my office hours so as to be able to practice in Montclair. I chose Montclair to practice in because I feel that this is a very health conscious town and people here are very open and enthusiastic about holistic healthcare.

J.K.- What is the best part of your job?

I would have to say that the best part of my job is restoring peoples’ health and improving their overall sense of wellbeing.

J.K.- What are the most common reasons patients come to you?

People come for pain reduction, to improve their active ranges of motion, preventative healthcare, and to seek advice and alternatives to traditional allopathic medicine; I am a strong advocate of clinical/medicinal nutrition as a means of correcting various pathologies and disorders. I also do a great deal of myo-fascial work in conjunction to osseous manipulation, and this seems to be the best combination for reducing pain and restoring proper motion.

J.K.- What are the overall benefits to receiving chiropractic adjustments?

The overall benefits of getting adjusted are correcting subluxation(s), which is the removal of nerve interference caused by slightly malpositioned vertebrae which either directly or indirectly cause a nerve to have pressure exerted upon it. When the bone is put back into its proper position, nerve pressure is reduced and thus the body and its organs are allowed to function more efficiently.

J.K.- How can working with a chiropractor help patients who are doing other things such as acupuncture or yoga aide in overall health?

The first thing I would like to state is that they are all holistic and they all compliment each other in improving a person’s health without side effects and with out the need for drugs. Now, to get more specific with regards to chiropractic and yoga- the overall wellness of the spine is complimented by the practice of the yoga postures. Chiropractic adjustments help to increase both passive and active ranges of motion by aligning the spinal column and thus enabling the yoga practitioner to achieve the desired yoga postures.

J.K.- What do you like to do when you aren’t hard at work?

I enjoy working out at the gym, going to the ocean, spending time outdoors, playing with my cats, and most of all spending time with my wife (and NO she is not making me say that).
