Traumatic Birth Syndrome and Why Children May Require Chiropractic Care
Traumatic Birth Syndrome (TBS) is defined as the spinal damage done to an infant as a result of the medically assisted delivery process. Cases of TBS are unreported due to the fact that they are often undiagnosed and as a result are untreated, according to the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapuetics (October 1993). Traumatic Birth Syndrome causes subluxations, spinal misalignments causing nerve interference.
Dr. G. Gutmann, a German medical researcher discovered that over 80% of the infants he examined shortly after birth were suffering from injury to the cervical spine, causing all types of health problems. Dr. Abraham Towbin, from Harvard Medical School and the Department of Pathology stated at the 18th Annual Meeting of the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy that the birth process “even under optimal conditions, is potentially a traumatic, crippling event for the fetus.”
“Spinal cord and brain stem injuries occur often during the process of birth but frequently escape diagnosis.” (Towbin, A., “Latent Spinal Cord and brain Stem Injury in Newborn Infants”, Develp Med. Child. Neurol, 11:54-68,1969) This often leads to something known as Blocked Atlantal Nerve Syndrome, a primary cause of upper respiratory infections including ear infections and chronic tonsillitis. (Gutman, G., “Blocked Atlantal Nerve Syndrome In Infants and Small Children”, Manuelle Medizin, 1987). Blocked Atlantal Nerve Syndrome was studied in 43 children; the children were suffering from ear infections and were getting chiropractic adjustments. Forty out of the 43 children studied improved with chiropractic care within two weeks after being adjusted, according to Froehle. (Froehle, R.M., J Manipulative Physiol Ther, 1996 Mar-Apr;19(3):169-77). Yet another study by J.E. Upledger showed a direct and significant relationship between restrictions in movement of the upper neck area of the spine and children with learning disabilities. (Upledger, J.E., J Am Osteopath Assoc, 1978 Jun;77(10):760-76)
Dr. G. Gutman studied 1000 children treated via chiropractic for TBS; the children received spinal manipulations to the C1 (atlas) region of the cervical spine. The results were very positive- without exception all of the children improved from a variety of ailments such as: congenital torticollis, disturbed mental and linguistic development, chronic rhinitis, bronchitis, tonsillitis, gastroenteritis, conjunctivitis, restless sleep, seizures, cerebral spasms, disturbed motor responses with repetitive falls, infantile scoliosis, sacra-iliac misalignments, “growing pains,” and appetite disturbances. “If the indications are correctly observed,” states Dr. Gutmann, “chiropractic can often bring about amazingly successful results, because the therapy is a causal one.” “With developmental disturbances of every kind, the atlanto-occipital joints should be examined and in each case be treated manually in a qualified manner. The success of this treatment eclipses every other attempt at treatment, including especially the use of medications.” (Gutmann G. “Blocked Atlantal Nerve Syndrome in Infants and Small Children.” Originally published in Manuelle Medizine, Springer-Verlag, 1987. English translation published in International Review of Chiropractic July/Aug 1990)
In conclusion, two ideas must be stated and reinforced: 1. Children should get chiropractic examinations to assess for the necessity of chiropractic care, and 2. Chiropractic spinal manipulation/adjustment is beneficial for children.
