Yoga  is a term used to describe a discipline which encompasses a physical, mental, and spiritual practice.  Originating in India over 5,000 years ago, yoga is one of the six original schools of Hindu philosophy. Various traditions of yoga are found in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. Today, in the U.S. there are over 11 million yoga practitioners.

There are various forms/schools of yoga such as vinyasa, hatha, and ashtanga, to name a few. Montclair chiropractor, Dr. Gary Eshanov, advises all perspective yoga students to do some research and to try the different styles of yoga to determine which one they enjoy most and which may benefit them the most. Regardless of the form or style of yoga, it is important to make sure that the original asanas are being taught (original poses). Students are also advised to be weary of practices that call themselves yoga, but are really not, such as “laughing yoga”  “suspension yoga” or “dance yoga”. Neither of these forms are true forms of yoga as they emerged recently, do not teach the traditional asanas (postures),  and have been completely modified from what real yoga.

Montclair chiropractor, Dr. Gary Eshanov, strongly recommends patients to try yoga and to experience its health benefits.  Dr. Eshanov, also advises that anyone with pre-existing back problems consult with a chiropractor who is knowledgeable in yoga prior to undertaking a rigid yoga practice.

Some of the benefits of yoga are:

  • improves joint function
  • improves mood
  • reduces depression
  • reduces symptoms of ADD/ADHD
  • boosted immunity
  • improves memory and function
  • improves circulation
  • stronger bones
  • stress management
  • improves breathing/ helps with asthma
  • reduces hypertension
  • helps with weight loss
  • and much more!

Last, and certainly not least, anyone undertaking a yoga practice should go at their own pace and not try to keep up with more advanced practitioners. Perfect yoga postures are achieved over time, not over night!
