The kidneys are responsible for filtering the blood from impurities and metabolic by-products. Processed foods, flour, sugar, low-fiber diets and meat may harm the kidneys and cause them to perform at a level less than optimal; this in turn may cause congestion of the filtering system (including the bladder and urinary tract). Proper kidney care is vital to overall health. Drinking plenty of clean water and fresh juices is imperative.  One such juice is watermelon juice.

Watermelon contains a lot of potassium, which is very helpful in cleaning or washing off the toxic depositions in the kidneys. In particular,  it is instrumental in lowering the concentration of uric acid in the blood, thus reducing the chances of kidney damage as well as the formation of renal calculi in the kidney (kidney stones). Furthermore, this fruit is high in water content and acts as a natural diuretic by inducing frequent urination, which helps to clean the kidneys. Magnesium is also present in watermelon and together with the potassium helps to reduce hypertension. The carotenoids in watermelon prevent arterial walls and veins from hardening, thus also reducing hypertension. Last but not least, lycopene is also found in watermelon and is known to help prevent cancer and prostate growth, as well as it helps damaged tissue to get repaired.

Before we proceed with a recipe for a watermelon cleanse, it is imperative to mention two more key factors- 1. watermelon rind should also be juiced or eaten due to its high water content, citrulline,  vitamin C, beta-carotene, B vitamins, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and fiber; 2. the following persons should consult with their doctor(s) prior to doing a watermelon kidney cleans: diabetics, those suffering with hypertension, and those suffering with kidney stones/disease.

Below is a suggestion of a great watermelon tonic:

8 ounces of distilled water

16 ounces of fresh watermelon (organic)

1/4 fresh lemon

Note: when cutting the watermelon include the rind and cut off the skin as it is indigestible.

Blend or juice the above ingredients and make sure to drink slowly, allowing the body to aborb the vitamins and nutrients.  Feel free to experiment and add such ingredients as cranberries, ginger, blueberries, etc.
